ClassGraphic Co-workers at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York (SDNY), Preet Bharara and Mimi Rocah have decades of experience in the Department of Justice, locally and at the national level. Through an intimate conversation between two colleagues, learn about the state of justice in America today.

Preet Bharara, a former U.S. Attorney for SDNY, is a renowned and highly regarded lawyer who focuses on investigations and criminal litigation matters. Dubbed “one of the most consequential prosecutors in American history” by The New Yorker, Bharara led some of the most significant criminal and civil litigations brought in the SDNY on behalf of the United States, leaving an indelible impact on the office. He is widely recognized as one of the most effective and transformative U.S. Attorneys to ever lead the SDNY and one of the most credible voices in law enforcement. He was nominated to the post in May 2009 by President Obama and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in August 2009. While serving as U.S. Attorney from 2009 to 2017—one of the longest-serving appointments in the history of the SDNY—he oversaw more than 200 Assistant U.S. Attorneys, who handled cases involving civil rights violations, cybercrime, domestic and international terrorism, financial fraud, gang violence, narcotics and arms trafficking, organized crime, and public corruption. With Bharara at the helm, the SDNY saw one of its most productive periods in its history.

Miriam E. Rocah (Mimi) was elected as District Attorney of Westchester County in November 2020 through a grassroots campaign against an incumbent. During her four years as D.A., she modernized the office, aggressively pursued gun violations and violent criminals, developed ways to better serve crime victims, and instituted sensible criminal justice reforms. Prior to becoming D.A., Rocah served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the for the Southern District of New York (SDNY) from 2001-2017, rising to become Chief of the White Plains Criminal Division. As an AUSA, she prosecuted and oversaw cases involving violent crime, organized crime, human trafficking, sex trafficking, child exploitation, fraud, and public corruption. She also co-chaired task forces on opioids, fentanyl, and sex trafficking. Before running for D.A., Rocah was a legal analyst at MSNBC/NBC News from 2017-19 and is now a frequent commentator on MSNBC, CNN, The Contrarian, Vox Media, and numerous podcasts and radio shows on topics relating to law, justice, women’s issues, and antisemitism. She has written and published dozens of opinion pieces on those topics. She is an expert in the rule of law, democracy, and the corruption and abuse of the justice system, and is currently writing a book with Harper Collins Publishing due out next fall. Rocah is currently an adjunct professor at Fordham University School of Law.
