Do you remember listening to a sappy song on a lonely Saturday night? This course is designed to help you begin writing your memoir by exploring songs that were meaningful to you during different periods of your life. Each participant will play a selected song and read aloud a piece of writing about what that song meant to them. Whether your musical tastes lean toward classical, rock and roll, jazz, punk, hip-hop, or any other genre, we will explore the memories, emotions, and stories that music evokes. If music is not applicable to you, feel free to explore any of the arts: a movie, book, artist, etc. For each class, you will receive ten writing prompts designed to spark your imagination. Using those prompts, you will write a short personal essay focusing on a particular aspect of your life story. Through the arts and writing, you will uncover memories, reflect on significant moments, and begin creating a memoir that is uniquely your own.
