ID : 12486
« back to classes page
Before Harlem became the epicenter of the African American experience, it was the Jewish immigrant neighborhood, home to over 175,000 Jews at the turn of the twentieth century. See synagogues, theaters, department stores, and other venues that were built by Jews for Jews, and that now function as part of the landscape of today's Harlem. Learn about the role that key Harlem Renaissance sites in how the Jewish "Great White Way" led to the Civil Rights movement and explore parallels between the Jewish and African American communities.
