ClassGraphic Explore the medium of watercolor and take your paintings from ordinary to extraordinary. Various techniques and exercises in color, composition, drawing and value will help you develop your own personal style of painting. Critiques and class discussion are an important part of this class. Work from photos, still life and references. Additionally this semester we will paint on a variety of surfaces, and construct pop up greeting cards. This class is intended for students who have some experience with the medium.

Hope Friedland’s SUGGESTED Watercolor Supply List
Yellow mechanical or hg drawing pencil and sharpener
White or kneaded eraser (no pink erasers)
Small water spray bottle

Two water containers like 1 lb. cottage cheese containers
140 pound cold press watercolor paper can be “rough” but not smooth made by ARCHES. can be in a “block”. Size is approximate so get something close to 11x15 or purchase large sheets 22x30 and cut them into four 11x15 sheets. Use a coupon from Michael’s. Paper can be expensive.
Tissues or toilet tissue roll
1” blue tape (Home Depot) or white “painters” tape 1 “ from art suppliers. Painting board 13x17 like Masonite, gator board from Amazon or foam core board. You must wrap the foam core board in clear packing tape to avoid warping. We use old election signs by the side of the road. These are advert. signs which are stuck into the ground with wire pins. Or purchase white plastic corrugated boards . (Really is the same thing as an election board.) All boards should measure approximately 13 x 17.

9x12 sketchbook , ruler , T square, small scissors, little pointy knife like an exact-o knife.

COLORS
****Do not buy colors that say the word HUE!
Aureolin (cool Yellow)
A red like cadmium red or vermillion or scarlet - Choose One Only
Permanent rose
Cobalt blue
Ultramarine blue
Sap green
New gamboge - Warm Yellow
Burnt sienna
This is a good basic amount and variety of colors. You can always add more colors. I do not buy a “set” because I don’t really use the white, black and I don’t usually love the green color.
Mijello airtight palette has a seal which keeps colors moist.
BE CAREFUL!!! Do not tip this palette when the colors are wet...all the colors will run into each other. When you fill a new palette leave it open for about 3-5 days. A skin will form on the newly placed colors.

BRUSHES
No.4, 10, 12 round  brushes

1/2, 1” and 1 1/2 “ flat brushes or flat chisel
No. 4 rigger or liner brush (long haired skinny brush)
Scrubber brushes ...thick hard brushes to remove watercolor mistakes. Google it! I use two different shapes.... One is on an angle straight across, the second is shaped like a finger nail rounded
Start slowly and save all receipts in case of returns!
If you don’t understand something please ask! ! !
Additional items to collect if you want to...
Kosher or coarse salt, sponge, old washcloth, two old tooth brushes, black “micron” pens from amazon # 03, 08, masking fluid like pebeo or Windsor newton (Top hard to remove) Doc ph. Martins bleed proof white ... a very opaque white water soluble paint in a very small jar from Amazon, colored pencils, pastels, old credit card.
I buy supplies from Amazon, Michael’s, Oriental art supply, Jerry/s art o Rama which is up the meritt pkwy exit 40, go right one block , make a left into parking lot. Google the hours. Ask neighbors, friends and family members for the old stuff they no longer use. Buy supplies at garage sales. Look for sales. Daniel Smith, Schminke, Holbein and Windsor Newton are all great paint. I use Holbein .
Have a good time painting. Every time you paint you learn something new and you get better and better. It takes practice. Don’t get discouraged.
