Renowned short story writers have favorite authors and works that they wished they had written. Fascinating plots, tight writing, good pacing, and fine word choice may be the reasons for their admiration. Examine the short stories favored by professional authors themselves, including some by lesser known writers. Students will receive PDFs of the assignments via email one week in advance of class and are asked to read once for story and a second time for how the ideas, language, characters, and structure contribute to their particular success. Students will also receive discussion prompts and are encouraged to submit written responses to be shared prior to class. Authors to be considered may include William Trevor, William Faulkner, J. G. Ballard, Karen Russell, Grace Paley, Gina Berriault, and John Cheever among others.
