Inspired by the Manet/Degas exhibition at the Met and Sebastian Smee's Pulitzer-Prize winning book, The Art of Rivalry, this lecture series focuses on famous friends and foes in the art world and well-known artistic rivalries throughout the centuries. As Smee noted of his book's pairings, the rivalries presented in this series are "not the macho cliché of sworn enemies, bitter competitors, and stubborn grudge-holders slugging it out for artistic and worldly supremacy" but rather a study on "yielding, intimacy, and openness to influence. It is about susceptibility." Each session will cover a different grouping of some of history's most prolific artists, providing an in-depth exploration of their complex and creative relationships as they play out in their paintings and sculptures.

This session features Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo.
