Just in time for Halloween, create your own broom to take home, incorporating orange broom corn along with lavender stems in this fun workshop. After a brief introduction to the historical tools and materials used in broom making, including where to find, prepare, and care for the fiber, weave a 16-inch broom out of broom corn, also known as sorghum bicolor. This grass species is also called great millet, Indian millet, Guinea corn, or jowar. These brooms are both beautiful and useful, perfect for an autumnal harvest display, Halloween decoration, art piece for the wall, or sweeper. Please note that broom making is a surprisingly physical craft that requires strength and good dexterity in both hands and feet. Each broom is constructed in one continuous sitting using one length of twine. Students should be prepared to work while seated for extended periods (an hour or more at a time) and engage their core. Please wear clothing that can get dirty or an apron.
