Scotland, known for beautiful scenery and fine whisky, is also shaped by stories in the oral tradition of grand myths and legends, the beauty and challenges of country settings, and the demands of city life. Scottish short stories bring people and places to life with language that captures the country's color, values, and traditions. Students will receive PDFs of the assignments via email one week in advance of class and are asked to read once for story and a second time for how the ideas, language, characters, and structure contribute to their particular success. Students will also receive discussion prompts and are encouraged to submit written responses to be shared prior to class. Authors to be considered may include Lewis Gibbon, Ali Smith, and Ian Rankin.
