Look at landscapes from realism to abstraction. Starting with quick drawings to determine composition and value, explore themes such as seashore, vistas, trees, and more using watercolors. Supply your own images based on the theme, learn from techniques demonstrated in class, and receive individualized guidance.
Materials List
In this class you may paint with Watercolors. We will make Thumbnail and Value sketches
for planning, so you will need a small sketch pad or other paper, a pencil (#2B), and an eraser.
Watercolors
•Paper:140lb. Cold Press watercolor blocks 9”x12“. You may work larger if you wish. You may want to buy sheets of
paper, cut them into smaller sizes and tape them to a board. 140lb Rough is also an option. NY Central blocks or sheets
are reasonable, or consider The Master’s Choice, Kilimanjaro Original White (Cheap Joes), Fabriano Artistico, or Arches.
•Paint: Artist Grade Tubes, most of my paint is Schmincke.
Use what you have and add!
COOL YELLOW: Aureolin, Schmincke or Holbein are best. Substitute: W&N Lemon Yellow
WARM YELLOW: Cadmium Yellow Deep or Cadmium Yellow /or Substitute: W&N Cadmium Free Yellow Deep
OR Cadmium free Yellow, OR W&N Winsor Yellow
COOL REDs: W&N Permanent Rose.AND W&N Permanent Alizarin Crimson).
WARM RED: Cadmium Red. Substitute: W&N Cadmium Free Cadmium Red OR W&N Winsor Red
COOL BLUE: Phthalo Blue. Substitute: W&N Winsor Blue Green Shade OR Prussian Blue* (this has some black)
WARM BLUE: Ultramarine Blue, sometimes called French Ultramarine Blue.
NEUTRAL BLUE: Cobalt Blue Deep.
COOL GREEN: Phthalo Green. Substitute: W&N Winsor Green Blue Shade OR Viridian
Earth colors: BURNT SIENNA, BURNT UMBER, & YELLOW OCHRE. (W&N)
•Brushes
One flat: 3?4 or 1 inch, 1?2 inch flat and/or #10 or 12 round. One #8 and one #6 round. A Liner or Rigger #2.
Synthetic sable: Escoda Versatil, Winsor & Newton Synthetic Sable, daVinci Colineo, Princeton, or Mimik Kolinsky.
•Palette
Palettes by Creative Mark, Holbein, Tom Lynch, or Mijello Fusion. I use a John Pike standard palette. John Pike palettes
are available at: johnpikeart.com.
•Miscellaneous:
Paper Towels • 2 or 3 plastic containers for water • HB or B drawing pencil • Eraser (I prefer a kneaded eraser) • Sponge •
Masking Fluid (W&N or Turner) and disposable brushes (for masking).
Acrylics
•Paper/Boards:
Watercolor paper or paper made for oil painting, matboard. Stretched canvas or panels. 9 x 12 – 16 x 20”
•Paint: Use Heavy Bodied acrylics, or Open Acrylics (made by Golden). Set, or colors similar to above.
Brushes:
4 – 6 brushes minimum, Bristle or Synthetic Filberts #’s 1 -12. Add some Rounds and Flats later. Brands: Creative Mark,
Grumbacher, Langnickel, Princeton, Robert Simmons.
•Miscellaneous:
‘Stay wet’ type of palette or disposable palette. ‘Butcher’s Tray’ or aluminum bake tray also work. 2 plastic containers for
water. Paper Towels. Soft Vine Charcoal, HB pencil, OR water-soluble pencil. White charcoal pencil (for toned canvas).
