CourseGraphic Finnish painter Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) is relatively unknown outside of the Nordic countries. Working in remote locations amid personal struggles, she painted modern portraits of her mother and neighbors in an abstract and sparse style. Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck, running December 5, 2025 through April 5, 2026, is the first to showcase her art in a major US museum and features nearly 60 works on loan from international museums and private collections.
