This class focuses on The Sweetness of Water (2021) by Nathan Harris is a debut novel set in post-Civil War Georgia, following two newly freed brothers, Prentiss and Landry, who find work on the farm of a white couple, George and Isabelle Walker, who are grieving the loss of their son. The story explores themes of race, love, and identity as the brothers seek to reunite with their mother, while a parallel plot reveals a forbidden romance between two Confederate soldiers, leading to community conflict and violence. It was selected for Oprah's Book Club and became a New York Times bestseller.
