This innovative program combines the immediacy of live performance, insights into classic and contemporary literature, and lively discussions with fellow participants. At every session, watch and listen as professional actress Kate Black-Spence reads a thought-provoking short story live and then engage in a discussion led by cultural historian Lori Rotskoff. The course will cover a variety of compelling short stories by acclaimed writers; each week’s title will remain a surprise until the day the class meets. Students will receive a copy of the story via email before each session for future reference, or in case participants want to follow along during the dramatic reading. No advance reading is required. This is not only a unique opportunity to learn more about the short story genre, it also fills a void felt by theater-goers who are missing live performances during the pandemic.
