In an open studio, each person creates his or her own unique project in any style: realism, abstraction, impressionism or anything in between.  Gentle guidance and support will be provided, as needed, from an artist who has taught watercolors and won awards in pastels, acrylics,  and oils.  The relaxed atmosphere will foster creativity and encourage freedom of experimentation.  You can focus on personal expression and development and can use any medium you like (acrylic, oil, pastel, watercolor), but you will need to bring you own supplies.  Supply lists are available upon request.

The word calligraphy derives from the Greek words for beauty (kallos) and to write (graphein).  Students will create calligraphy pieces for framing and gift giving, address envelopes and draft an invitation.  Increase your mastery of this fun and useful skill by practicing in between classes.  Calligraphy Style:  Using dip pens and ink learn the beautiful writing style of Spencerian. This class will review the elements and principles of art and exercise them through drawing.  Emphasis will be on developing skills such as perspective and rendering value, using cross-hatching.  Color theory and use of color in a composition will be studied.  Students new to drawing will be directed through these projects and experienced students will build on their creative capabilities.  Students are asked to bring a sketchbook, 9” x 12” or larger.  Basic materials will be provided.

Review the basics of visual representation while exploring watercolor techniques.   Subjects, ranging from still life and flower studies to cityscapes, landscapes, and portraits, are painted from observation, as well as from photographs and imagination.  Let your creativity soar and develop meaning in your work by using watercolor pencils, oil pastels, markers, colored pencil, as well as collage.  We will also experiment with sea sponges, salt, and plastic wrap for fascinating effects.  The work of prominent artists who combine drawing and painting with mixed media will be examined.    Please click on link: Supply List

Explore the realm of drawing using pencil, charcoal, ink, pastel, and oil pastel.  Each class will introduce a medium and its unique characteristics.  Demonstrations will provide instruction in various techniques before students compose their own piece, based on the arranged still-life.  One-on-one guidance will be provided by the instructor.  By the end of the class, students will have developed their drawing skills, strengthened their artistic perception and deepened their personal drawing style.  Students are asked to bring a sketchbook 9”x12”or larger.   Basic materials will be provided.
