The Ying Quartet occupies a position of unique prominence in the classical music world, combining electrifying performances with a fearlessly imaginative view of chamber music in today’s world.  Now in its second decade as a quartet, the Ying has established itself as an internationally celebrated ensemble playing the world’s most important concert halls; and their belief that concert music can be an integral part of community life has drawn the ensemble to take on unconventional projects and perform in diverse settings.  Their much-heralded collaboration with the Turtle Island Quartet won a Grammy Award in 2005, and a collaboration with the Billy Childs Chamber Jazz Ensemble was nominated for a Grammy in 2010.  The Ying Quartet’s Dim Sum features music by Chinese-American composers that merges the Western string quartet with the aural world of traditional Chinese music.  The Ying maintains full-time faculty positions at The Eastman School of Music, where they are currently Quartet-in-Residence.

Currently in its 45th season, the American String Quartet is internationally recognized as one of the world's finest ensembles and has spent decades honing the luxurious sound for which it is famous.  The Quartet is well known for its exceptional recordings of quartets by European masters and American composers.  The Quartet’s recordings of the complete Mozart string quartets on a matched set of Stradivarius instruments are widely held to set the standard for this repertoire.  Critics and colleagues hold the Quartet in high esteem and many of today’s leading artists and composers seek out the ensemble for collaborations.  Formed in 1974 when its original members were students at The Juilliard School, the American String Quartet was launched by winning both the Coleman Competition and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award in the same year.  Since that time, these musicians have continued to delight audiences across the globe with their outstanding performances.  Meet the musicians and enjoy refreshments at the post-concert reception.
