Many writers have found the short story, with its single focus, compression, and immense concern with language, the perfect vehicle for their efforts.  Late twentieth century authors have chosen timely interests or timeless ones and, using a typical format or a novel one, have pulled readers into rich and memorable experiences.  With such mind-opening stories, discussing them becomes both delightful, provocative and valuable.  Using Martone, Michael and Lex Williford, eds., The Scribner Anthology of Contemporary Short Fiction: 50 North American Short Stories Since 1970 (2nd ed., Touchstone, 2007) (available online in paperback), the first readings will be ZZ Packer’s “Brownies” p.503 and David Leavitt’s “Territory” p.335.  Please mark for language, structure and character development.

Schedule : Weekly - Wed 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM; 6 sessions; starting 3/22/2017, ending 5/10/2017 ; Class Skip Dates : (No class on 4/12/2017, 4/19/2017)

This class explores contemporary memoirs of childhood and youth by writers from diverse social backgrounds.  How do authors translate lived experiences of family life into compelling literary works?  How do they chronicle the creation of complex identities shaped by race, class, gender, ethnicity, geography, religion, and disability?  Analyzing both the possibilities and the limitations of the memoir genre, we will discuss how authors map the emotional landscape of private life while addressing broader themes in American history, politics, and culture.  Come share your ideas with other passionate readers in a stimulating yet relaxed environment.  Please read Desert Exile: The Uprooting of a Japanese-American Family by Yoshiko Uchida before our first class meeting on March 22.  Other assigned books include: Jacqueline Woodson, Brown Girl Dreaming; Emily Rapp, Poster Child; and J. D. Vance, Hillbilly Elegy.
