This armchair tour of Gainsborough: The Fashion of Portraiture, running February 12, 2026, through May 25, 2026 at the Frick Collection will enhance your visit or serve as a fine substitute for those unable to go in person. The exhibition explores the relationship between works by period-defining English artist Thomas Gainsborough and fashion of British society in the eighteenth century. Like the cut and cloth of a jacket, characteristics of the portrait itself could be perceived as avant-garde or passé. The trappings, trade, and power of fashion permeated the times. The first exhibit devoted to Gainsborough’s portraiture in New York includes more than two dozen of Gainsborough’s most spectacular portraits from across North America and the United Kingdom, representing each stage of his four-decade career.
